According to The Guardian, the Queensland government has released concept images and a master plan for Brisbane’s broader Victoria Park precinct following construction of the stadium and aquatic centre for the 2032 Olympics.

Victoria Park is Brisbane’s largest inner-city parkland and is significant to First Nations elders. Its selection as an Olympic venue has prompted protests by community members concerned about losing green space and areas of cultural importance.

The draft legacy plan includes two proposed pedestrian bridges across the inner-city bypass, which separates the site from Spring Hill and the rest of Brisbane’s CBD. The road had been a significant constraint for planners.

The plan also proposes flooding existing sports fields to expand the York’s Hollow wetland. The government says about two-thirds of the current park will remain public green space and that the precinct will become a world-class destination for future generations.

Save Victoria Park spokesperson Sue Bremner criticised the images as misleading and said they did not amount to a plan. She questioned how parking, roads, a train-station connection, crowd-holding plazas and a bypass ramp would be accommodated, while arguing the site was complex, expensive and poorly connected for sporting venues.
