According to BBC News, flights have restarted at Bristol Airport after a runway defect led to the suspension of all flights from shortly after 18:00 BST on Friday until 08:00 on Saturday.

The airport said some flights would continue to face disruption, including delayed take-offs and diversions. In a statement on its website, a spokesperson said: “There will be some disruption to some flights today. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.” Passengers affected were advised to contact their airline.

Hundreds of passengers were stranded on Friday evening after the runway closure. No further official information about the nature of the defect has been released.

Paul Smith, who had planned to fly to Glasgow for his son’s 20th birthday, said he had to cancel his trip. He criticised the communication, advice and support for passengers, saying there had been no tannoy announcements for more than an hour.

Dave Blackwell, travelling home from Rhodes, said his return flight was diverted to Newcastle after passengers spent three hours at Rhodes Airport without information. He said travellers were then told they faced a five- or six-hour bus journey.
