Eileen Wang, the former mayor of Arcadia, California, has pleaded guilty to acting as an illegal foreign agent for China. This plea, which could result in a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison, highlights ongoing concerns about foreign influence in local U.S. politics. According to The Guardian, Wang, 58, and an associate worked with the People’s Republic of China to promote Beijing’s interests, touting pro-PRC propaganda on a website purported to be a news source for the local Chinese American community.

Wang’s resignation from her post as mayor came just after she agreed to the plea deal. Arcadia, often referred to as the “Chinese Beverly Hills,” has a significant Chinese American population, with about half of its 56,000 residents identifying as of Chinese descent.
