According to Cnbc, Canada announced retaliatory tariffs on about $20 billion worth of U.S. goods, saying the measures match “dollar for dollar” the 50% import taxes imposed by President Donald Trump after U.S.-Canada trade talks broke down.

Ottawa’s new duties cover more than 700 U.S. goods and range from 15% to 50%. The affected imports include dairy, seafood, appliances, wood and paper products, and clothing. Canada will impose 50% tariffs on American steel and aluminum, doubling the current rate. Officials said the measures on metals and wood respond to earlier U.S. tariffs on steel, aluminum, lumber and other products.

The tariffs are scheduled to take effect Sept. 8. Canada also announced a $7.5 billion package to support businesses and workers harmed by U.S. tariffs. Canadian Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said at a Tuesday news conference: “When the United States of America asked too much and offered too little, we made a choice. We chose Canada.”

The duties could have been avoided through a trade deal before U.S. measures took effect on Saturday. Trump had said a deal was nearly complete, but Canada suspended negotiations Friday evening, saying the United States made unreasonable demands. The Trump administration accused Ottawa of seeking last-minute changes. Prime Minister Mark Carney said retaliation “will raise costs and reduce choice for Canadians,” while Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc said Canada still believed a mutually beneficial agreement was possible.

Trump responded on Truth Social by suggesting the United States could halt business with Ontario and by again raising the possibility of renaming Lake Ontario “Lake America.” He also accused Canada of targeting U.S. farmers and criticized the U.S. trade deficit with Canada, which is primarily tied to U.S. purchases of Canadian crude oil.
