According to Cnbc, Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on a range of U.S. goods took effect Tuesday after trade talks collapsed at the end of August. The duties range from 15% to 50% on hundreds of U.S. products worth a total of $27.6 billion.

The affected goods include dairy, agricultural equipment, paper, household appliances and electronics. Tariffs on U.S. steel, aluminum and iron products doubled to 50%, while furniture, motorbikes, clothing and some beauty products were also subject to the highest rate.

Canada described the action as a “dollar for dollar” response to U.S. levies on Canadian goods targeted by Section 338 tariffs. The Department of Finance said the measures would protect Canadian workers, producers and manufacturers by helping them compete with U.S. products in the domestic market.

Existing Canadian counter-tariffs remain in place, including a 25% duty on the politically sensitive autos sector. Officials in Ottawa and Washington have continued to blame each other publicly for the failure to secure a trade agreement.

The United States exported $333.6 billion in goods to Canada and imported $381.9 billion from Canada. Economists said the newly affected goods represent a relatively small share of overall trade, though small- and medium-sized businesses and companies in the most-affected sectors could face a severe blow. Ottawa announced a $7.5 billion support package for businesses and workers last month, extending an existing $25 billion response to the U.S. global tariff offensive that began in April 2025.
