According to ABC News, a 41-year-old Canberra man has faced the ACT Magistrates Court after police alleged he kicked and strangled a 15-year-old girl during a family violence incident at a home in Canberra’s north on Sunday.

ACT Policing alleged the man returned to a property he shared with the girl and his partner, then became involved in an argument with the teenager on Sunday afternoon. Police alleged he punched a window and, when the girl confronted him, kicked and strangled her.

Investigators said the girl broke free and began calling police. The man then allegedly threw a piece of broken glass at her. He is also alleged to have kicked his partner when she tried to intervene. A neighbour called police during the incident, and the man was arrested at about 2:30pm.

The man appeared in court on two counts of common assault, as well as charges of choking, strangling or suffocating a person and damaging property. He applied for bail, with his lawyer telling the court he had a place in a residential detox program beginning on Wednesday.

Prosecutors opposed bail, citing concerns that he could reoffend or endanger others. Special Magistrate Sean Richter said bail could be considered if evidence of the detox program booking was provided. The man withdrew his application and was remanded in custody, with an expected application for release later this week.
