Canberrans with disability fear NDIS changes will cut vital support. According to ABC News, individuals are worried about the potential impact on their mental health and future planning due to ongoing adjustments to the program.
Kaleen resident Ellie Kaduszyn, who lives with autism, has received in-home support through the NDIS since she was a teenager. She expressed concern that proposed federal changes might hinder her ability to participate in community activities, which she sees as vital for her independence and mental well-being. Kaduszyn highlighted how participation in sports and social activities helps her feel included in society.
NDIS recipient Christina Ryan emphasized the need for stability in the lives of people with disabilities. She noted that the federal government’s announcement to reduce the number of participants from 760,000 to around 600,000 and cut funding for social and community activities has created uncertainty. Ryan called for the government to consider inflation and the rising cost of living when determining NDIS package allocations.
The ACT government is currently assessing how to address potential gaps in support created by the federal changes. ACT Disability, Carers and Community Services Minister Suzanne Orr stated that they have many questions regarding the proposed adjustments and are exploring various options to ensure support remains accessible.
While the federal government aims to streamline the NDIS, concerns persist about the adequacy of local services to meet the needs of those who will be affected by the changes. Ryan expressed skepticism about whether state and territory governments can re-establish necessary support systems quickly enough to fill the void left by the NDIS adjustments.
Federal Finance Minister Katy Gallagher defended the overhaul, arguing that it is essential for ensuring that those who genuinely require support can access it effectively while managing the program’s costs sustainably.
