Arabic version: ناجية من السرطان تحتضن عدم التماثل بدلاً من خيارات إعادة البناء
Aarthi Ayyar-Biddle, a 45-year-old from Canberra/Ngunnawal land, has shared her journey of embracing an asymmetrical body following her breast cancer diagnosis. After undergoing a single mastectomy, she decided against breast reconstruction, identifying herself as a ‘uniboober.’ According to ABC News, Aarthi aims to model a positive body image for her two teenage sons, showing confidence in her new appearance.
Initially diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma, Aarthi faced a rapid treatment timeline, beginning chemotherapy just two to three weeks after discovering a lump. Although she considered a double mastectomy, her doctors recommended a single mastectomy due to her lack of genetic risk factors and the potential complications associated with double surgery.
Throughout her treatment, Aarthi carefully weighed her options regarding reconstruction. She expressed a desire to maintain her physical fitness and avoid further surgeries that could prolong her recovery process. Conversations with her husband reassured her that her worth was not tied to her physical appearance, allowing her to embrace her decision.
Aarthi also reflected on societal pressures regarding body image, particularly for women of South Asian descent. She noted the importance of not rushing into significant surgical decisions and highlighted the enjoyment she still finds in having one breast, especially during intimate moments. Gardening has played a vital role in her healing process, and she plans to commemorate her journey with body art that symbolizes her experiences.
