Carlos Alcaraz, the two-time Wimbledon champion, has announced his withdrawal from the upcoming tournament due to a wrist injury. The world number two initially sustained the injury during the first round of the Barcelona Open last month and subsequently withdrew from the French Open, where he is the two-time defending champion. According to BBC News, Alcaraz shared on Instagram that while his recovery is progressing, he is not yet ready to compete.

Alcaraz expressed disappointment over missing both Queen’s and Wimbledon, stating, “They are two truly special tournaments for me and I will miss them a lot.” The 23-year-old had hoped to build on his successful year, which included winning his first Australian Open title and becoming the youngest man to complete the career Grand Slam. However, he will now miss the entire grass court season and most of the clay court swing.

This withdrawal not only impacts Alcaraz’s ranking but also boosts the title chances for Jannik Sinner, who replaced him as world number one last month and has shown dominant form on the ATP Tour. Although Sinner has won six consecutive Masters 1,000 tournaments, he has opted not to compete in any grass court events leading up to Wimbledon due to fatigue.

Wrist injuries pose a significant risk for tennis players, often requiring careful management to avoid long-term issues. Alcaraz has previously emphasized the importance of not forcing his return to avoid jeopardizing his future tournaments. His absence from Wimbledon leaves a notable gap in the draw, significantly affecting the competition dynamics and providing opportunities for other top players in the absence of both Alcaraz and Sinner.
