According to ABC News, newly released CCTV footage shows the moment a car became airborne and smashed into the side of a Brisbane City Council bus in Rocklea last week. The footage was recorded inside the bus.
Emergency services were called to the intersection of Beaudesert and Granard roads about 6:30pm on July 29 after reports that a hatchback had launched into the bus. The vehicle became wedged in its side.
The bus was travelling back to its depot at the time and carried only the driver and his wife. Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner told ABC radio that the driver remained calm and helped the woman driving the car out of her vehicle and into a bus seat.
“The driver went straight into action and assisted the driver of the car,” Mr Schrinner said, adding that the driver had served with council for at least seven years and received many commendations from the public. After checking on the woman, the driver could be heard on the radio saying: “Mate, everything’s OK, we’re fine.”
The 45-year-old Pallara woman was taken to hospital in shock, and no serious injuries were reported. Police said a black SsangYong, driven by a 66-year-old Durack man, attempted to merge from a centre lane and turn near the intersection, causing the driver of a blue Yaris to swerve into the bus. The SsangYong driver was fined $690 and lost three demerit points for driving without due care and attention.
