On the evening of April 29th, the Canterbury Bankstown Chamber of Commerce transformed the Bryan Brown Theatre & Function Centre into a vibrant hub of discussion and entertainment with their Business After 5 event, “Illuminate Your Night: A Night Economy Extravaganza.” This significant gathering, lasting from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM, aimed to spotlight the burgeoning night-time economy of the Canterbury-Bankstown area—a sector providing employment to about 20% of the local populace.

The event was an integral part of the NSW Government’s Vibrancy Reforms initiatives, which focus on revitalizing the state’s nightlife. These reforms are particularly aimed at simplifying existing regulations around noise, planning, and liquor licensing to foster a more lively night-time culture. By doing so, they hope to create a safer and more inclusive environment that extends operating hours for businesses and enhances community engagement.

The evening featured a mixture of live music performances, DJ sets, keynote speeches by Mayor Bilal El Hayek of Canterbury Bankstown and The Hon John Graham; Special Minister of State, Minister for Roads, Minister for the Arts, Minister for Music and the Night-time Economy, and Minister for Jobs and Tourism; and insightful panel discussions led by industry experts who shared their perspectives on the opportunities and challenges faced by businesses operating after dark. In addition, attendees enjoyed a variety of culinary delights, showcasing the local flavors that make Canterbury-Bankstown a unique place to explore at night.

This initiative underscores an ongoing commitment to enhancing the economic and social fabric of Canterbury-Bankstown through innovative approaches to urban management and community involvement, paving the way for a brighter, more dynamic future as the sun sets.
