According to France 24, almost all migrants who entered Spain’s enclave of Ceuta from neighbouring Morocco had left by Saturday, with officials saying the territory was “almost” back to normal after a mass influx over several days.

An estimated 60,000 migrants entered Ceuta during the period, France 24 reported. At least 67 people lost their lives in the attempt to cross into the Spanish enclave, highlighting the deadly consequences of the large-scale movement across the border.

Spain has announced plans to install a 500-metre-long containment barrier along the sea border. The proposal comes after the arrivals placed Ceuta at the centre of renewed attention over migration between Morocco and Spain.

Meanwhile, a majority of European Union countries called for emergency talks in an open letter to the bloc’s interior ministers. The report said the appeal followed the mass arrivals in Ceuta, as officials addressed the aftermath of the crossings.
