Arabic version: توجيه التهم في قضية قتل الطفلة البالغة من العمر خمس سنوات
The family of Kumanjayi Little Baby has expressed relief following the charging of a suspect in her alleged murder. According to SBS News, Warlpiri Elder and family spokesperson Robin Japanangka Granites stated that they are grateful charges have been laid against 47-year-old Jefferson Lewis, who was arrested earlier this week.
Lewis faces one count of murder and two additional charges that cannot be reported due to legal restrictions. He is expected to appear in Darwin Local Court on Tuesday. The body of Kumanjayi Little Baby was discovered at around midday on Thursday by police, approximately 5km from where she had disappeared days before.
Granites urged the community to respect the mourning period and emphasized the importance of avoiding political discussions surrounding the tragedy. “Our little baby’s passing must not become a politician issue or an argument,” he stated, calling for unity during this difficult time.
In related news, police have made additional arrests connected to disturbances that occurred outside Alice Springs Hospital, where Lewis was treated following his arrest. Five individuals have been taken into custody, with further arrests anticipated as the investigation continues.
