According to BBC News, Chelsea Women’s 2-0 victory over Roma in the Women’s Champions League underlined their ability to win in different ways. Sonia Bompastor’s side are unbeaten in all competitions, level at the top of the Women’s Super League with Manchester City after seven games, and have won two and drawn one of their first three Champions League phase matches.
Chelsea dominated the first half against Roma but missed a series of chances before substitute Ellie Carpenter opened the scoring in the 51st minute. Defender Kadeisha Buchanan added the second goal shortly before the end. Bompastor said she was pleased with the team’s defensive performances, noting Chelsea have not conceded in their three Champions League games.
The French coach said a solid defensive base is important for a side seeking to progress deep in competitions, while Chelsea’s quality should continue to create opportunities. She has rotated her squad to manage the demands of the WSL and Champions League, with the team able to shift between a back three and a back four and use goalkeeper Hannah Hampton’s distribution to play more directly.
Carpenter has scored four goals in all competitions, while Lauren James is in strong form and Lexi Potter has developed a partnership with Keira Walsh. Captain Erin Cuthbert said Chelsea had time to build during pre-season and that the quality had always been present. Bompastor also pointed to mentality, culture and values as central to the team’s progress after last season’s losses of the WSL and FA Cup crowns and their Champions League quarter-final exit to Arsenal.
