According to Cnbc, Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky said the company will spend “a lot more” on AI tokens this year than originally forecast after reporting second-quarter earnings that beat expectations and raising its full-year guidance. Airbnb shares surged 15% Friday following what Chesky described as one of the company’s strongest growth quarters in years.

Chesky said AI is helping across Airbnb’s business, including attracting bookings, making it easier for hosts to list and price homes, and lowering customer-service costs. The company is piloting AI-powered search, generating personalized listing highlights and answers for guests, and assisting hosts with listing creation and pricing. He said 45% of guests who interact with Airbnb’s AI agent do not need to speak with a human agent.

The company is cutting product-development time by roughly 60% and shipping about 80% more features year over year, Chesky said. Headcount has remained roughly flat year to date while AI spending has risen sharply. He said Airbnb’s approach is to use AI to get more out of employees rather than necessarily employ fewer people, adding that revenue per employee should continue to rise.

Airbnb uses more than a dozen AI models internally, including Anthropic’s Claude Code and OpenAI’s Codex, while limiting access to slower and more expensive models when additional capability is unnecessary. Chesky said the company is selective about token spending and views the cost of inference as small compared with booking revenue and gains from faster product development.

Chesky said first-time bookers are growing at their fastest pace in four years and that the U.S. business accelerated from the first quarter. Hotels are growing three times faster than Airbnb’s traditional home listings as the company expands beyond its home-rental marketplace.
