According to ABC News, chickens are being euthanased at Mountain Pride Farms on the NSW Central Coast while the business is investigated over allegations of animal cruelty. NSW Agriculture Minister Tara Moriarty told the upper house of parliament that the Department of Primary Industries was aware of concerns and that an enforcement agency was investigating.
Moriarty described the matter as an “emergency situation” and said the department had begun an investigation to determine whether there were food safety or biosecurity concerns at the property. She said euthanasia was a desperately sad situation but could be necessary to spare animals that might otherwise be in a very difficult situation.
Animal Liberation released video earlier in the week that it said depicted dead and dying chickens allegedly filmed at the farm. Greens MLC Abigail Boyd said concerns about Mountain Pride Farms were first raised in September 2025 and were allegedly brought to the attention of the RSPCA, the Department of Primary Industries, NSW Police and Central Coast Council.
Moriarty said action had been taken to prevent eggs from the farm entering food supply chains, with the department continuing to monitor biosecurity controls. Animal Liberation spokesperson Lisa Ryan said eggs from the farm were observed for sale in generic packaging at Central Coast fresh food markets on Saturday and at a Peats Ridge petrol station on Wednesday night. The farm’s owner declined to comment. Its website says it aims to produce high-welfare, free-range eggs.
