A new Chinatown precinct, civic square and revitalised streets and laneways are part of a bold master plan set to transform the southern Parramatta CBD area into a vibrant cultural, dining and entertainment precinct.

The CBD South Parramatta Master Plan is Council’s long-term vision to revitalise the area south of the train line by bringing new life to an underutilised part of the City.

Phase 1 includes a Chinatown precinct celebrating Chinese culture through food, events and public art alongside Woodhouse Square, a new civic public space that will attract more people to the southern part of the CBD.

City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Martin Zaiter said the master plan represents an opportunity to reshape a part of the CBD and reinforce Parramatta’s position as the cultural capital of Western Sydney.

“We want to unlock the full potential of the southern Parramatta CBD and our master plan is a clear vision to transform the precinct into a thriving destination for food, culture and entertainment,” Cr Zaiter said.

“This transformation will create a destination that celebrates the contribution of our Chinese Australian community, supports local businesses and boosts our booming night-time economy.

“We’ve received strong community support on this project which tells us people want to see this part of the CBD become more vibrant and connected, with great public spaces and experiences that attract visitors day and night.”

The plan also proposes upgraded streetscapes, wider footpaths, activated laneways and improved pedestrian connections to Parramatta Station and the broader City centre.

Work will now begin on Phase 2 of the broader CBD South Parramatta Precinct Master Plan, with further planning and community consultation to follow.
