According to ABC News, a 14-year-old Chinese exchange student accused of murdering another Chinese student near Newcastle has been committed to stand trial in the NSW Supreme Court. The accused can only be identified as JY for legal reasons.
JY is accused of murdering a 14-year-old in August 2025. The teenager died from stab wounds. JY, who was 13 at the time of the alleged murder, has pleaded not guilty.
On Monday, Judge Stephan Herridge committed JY to stand trial during proceedings in the Broadmeadow Children’s Court. A trial date has not been fixed. The matter is listed for a call-over hearing in the Supreme Court in October.
The case would make JY one of the youngest people to stand trial for murder in NSW. In April, prosecutors sought access to her psychiatric, education and custodial records in connection with the presumption of doli incapax, which presumes children are incapable of committing a crime because of a lack of mental capacity. JY objected, arguing the records were confidential and privileged, but the court rejected the defence and granted access.
A spokesperson for the Council of Australian Student Exchange Organisations previously told the ABC that the two girls were not part of a student exchange program, but were on a “study tour”.
