Arabic version: الائتلاف يراجع أفكاراً لاستخدام التقاعد الفائق في الإسكان
According to ABC News, the federal opposition is reviewing ideas that could allow people to use superannuation to help them afford a home.
Coalition housing spokesman Andrew Bragg said the party was considering options including allowing people to use super to offset a mortgage or as collateral for a loan. He said there was no official proposal, but the policies were under review as the party considered concerns that more Australians may not own homes by retirement.
The ideas had previously been discussed during Senate committee work chaired by Bragg in 2024. A party spokesperson, however, denied reports that the options were under consideration.
The comments followed One Nation’s proposal to let renters and mortgage borrowers divert 3 per cent of future super contributions to their bank accounts for up to three years. Assistant Treasurer Daniel Mulino called the proposal “a very irresponsible approach” and said it could affect retirement balances and have an inflationary impact.
One Nation Treasury spokesperson Barnaby Joyce said people would not take money from super unless they needed it. He also said One Nation should not have to model the effects of allowing people access to their own money.
