One of City of Canterbury Bankstown’s newest facilities has been recognised for its architectural excellence with an Australian Good Design Award.

The Hurlstone Memorial Reserve Community Centre was awarded the Gold Winner Accolade in the Architectural Design category at the 2024 Australian Good Design Awards ceremony.

The prestigious award recognises the Centre for its design excellence, it’s sense of place and the positive impact it has on the community.

Nestled within the leafy landscape of Hurlstone Memorial Reserve, the Centre was designed to provide a hub for community gatherings, a public amenities block and a rejuvenated park.

Since opening its doors in April last year, the Community Centre has been booked for nearly a hundred events, including children’s parties and weddings.

Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Bilal El-Hayek said the Centre has provided an inspiring and inclusive space for the community to come together.

“It has transformed Hurlstone Memorial Reserve into a vibrant community hub,” Mayor El-Hayek said.

“The community has really embraced the new Centre and their feedback to the design has been overwhelmingly positive.”

The building was designed by Sam Crawford Architects, who incorporated varied aspirations from residents drawn out of an extensive community consultation process.

The materials, colours and forms of the Centre were designed to complement the Federation heritage of the area. The red mesh screen confidently announces the Centre’s presence and the soft Y shape welcomes the community from multiple access points.

Director Sam Crawford said he was delighted to see the Centre recognised for its architectural design excellence.

“We are even more delighted that this modest building has been embraced by the local Hurlstone Park Community,” Mr Crawford said.

The Hurlstone Memorial Reserve Community Centre was also recognised with an award for small project architecture at the 2024 Australian Institute of Architects NSW Awards.
