Arabic version: طبيب شرعي يؤكد أن انخفاض حرارة الجسم هو سبب وفاة المتنزهين
A Victorian coroner has determined that two Chinese students, Yuhan Jin, 24, and Yewen Wang, 30, died as a result of hypothermia near Mount Bogong on October 3, 2025. The pair was found huddled together on a sleeping bag, having embarked on a challenging hike the previous day.
According to ABC News, the coroner’s report indicated that although the women appeared to be well equipped for their trek, they were found without their outer-shell jackets or beanies in freezing conditions. Their final communication revealed the difficult nature of their hike, with Yuhan describing it as “really, really tough” due to adverse weather conditions.
The women had planned a 54-kilometre circuit hike that was expected to take three to four days. However, they faced severe weather, including temperatures dropping to -3.2 degrees Celsius, high winds, and heavy snow, which likely disoriented them in the dark.
The coroner highlighted that the clothing the women were wearing was “not sufficient for the weather conditions” and noted that they did not attempt to use a lightweight tarp they carried for shelter. The coroner emphasized the importance of careful planning and awareness of weather conditions for future visitors to Mount Bogong, urging hikers to recognize their limitations in such challenging environments.
