According to ABC News, Corporal Brendan Hannam, an Australian Army soldier killed in a military training exercise in the Northern Territory, has been farewelled at a funeral service in Darwin. The 28-year-old father of two died two weeks earlier when a troop carrier rolled at the Mount Bundey Training Area, south of Darwin.
Five other men were injured in the crash. Hannam’s funeral was held at the Lone Pine Chapel at Robertson Barracks, where colleagues remembered him for his service, loyalty and commitment to his family.
Lieutenant Colonel Ash Zimmerlie said Hannam had served Australia “with distinction” during more than nine years in the Australian Defence Force. His service included international deployments to Afghanistan in 2019 and Ukraine in 2023.
“Corporal Hannam’s career was characterised by loyalty to his battalion, dedication to his profession and commitment to his mates,” Lieutenant Colonel Zimmerlie said. “He served this country honourably and he’s earned the respect of those alongside whom he served.”
Lieutenant Cooper Bridgeman described Hannam as steady, capable and trustworthy, and said he was a dedicated, selfless teammate and valued leader. He said Hannam was, above all, “a man of character, a loving partner and most of all a devoted father”. Hannam leaves behind his partner and two young children.
Chief of Army Susan Coyle said a thorough investigation into the crash was under way. The Australian Defence Force has also paused use of the Supacat HMT, or High Mobility Transporter, the troop carrier involved in the fatal rollover.
