According to ABC News, an 8-metre, significantly decomposed whale carcass washed up at South Cottesloe beach early on Thursday, prompting the closure of local beaches.

Cottesloe Mayor Melissa Harkins said all local beaches were closed while the council arranged removal of the whale, including Cottesloe main beach, where a shark barrier is in place. She urged people visiting the area to stay out of the water until the carcass had been removed and for some time afterwards.

Council staff planned to remove the carcass on Thursday. Ms Harkins said dozers were being organised because the whale was small enough to fit on the back of a Town of Cottesloe truck before being taken to landfill.

The discovery is the second dead whale to wash up on a Perth beach in recent weeks. On September 27, a 13-metre, 72-tonne humpback whale carcass washed up at south City Beach. Its removal required a crane and ultimately cost almost $180,000.
