Country music is experiencing a remarkable resurgence in Australia, as evidenced by the booming attendance at festivals across the nation. According to ABC News, the genre is witnessing a revival that few anticipated, with artists like Taylor Swift topping the charts once again.

Just five years ago, many country music artists were concerned about the future of their genre, with declining audiences and festival cancellations. However, 2026 has brought a surprising turn of events, as long-time fans and new listeners alike flock to shows, leading to sold-out events and a surge in popularity of cowboy boots as mainstream fashion.

Musician Zara Lindeman has observed a notable increase in young fans embracing country music, particularly following the pandemic. Lindeman, who grew up in Deniliquin in regional NSW, expressed her excitement about the genre’s newfound appeal among younger audiences. Spotify data indicates a significant 115 percent increase in country music streaming in Australia over the past three years, with the country ranking fourth globally for new listeners discovering the genre.

The increase in popularity is not limited to rural areas; data shows that 92 percent of country music streams in Australia come from urban listeners. This trend is reflected in the success of country music festivals, which have seen a 70 percent revenue increase since the pandemic. Major events like the Country Fest in Townsville sold more than 9,000 tickets recently, while other Queensland festivals have drawn crowds exceeding 60,000.

Despite the excitement surrounding the genre’s resurgence, some experts caution that the industry must ensure local Australian artists are not overshadowed by American megastars. Publicist Bec Gracie noted that while fans are eager to attend shows featuring U.S. artists, there is a risk that they may overlook homegrown talent. Nonetheless, the current boom in country music is inspiring a new generation, paving the way for the genre’s continued evolution in Australia.
