According to Cnbc, Jim Cramer said investors seeking diversification beyond the struggling artificial intelligence trade should consider consumer staples stocks. The CNBC “Mad Money” host said the group may offer a better place to be while issues affecting the technology sector are sorted out, calling for investors to consider “camping out in the staples for a bit.”
The Nasdaq-100, which tracks the biggest technology stocks, ended October down almost 7%. Investors rotated toward more defensive market areas: the S&P 500 Equal Weight gained roughly 5% during the month, while the consumer staples index rose 11.4%. That made staples the second-best-performing sector, behind energy.
Cramer highlighted Kimberly-Clark, Procter & Gamble, Constellation Brands and Coca-Cola. He said Kimberly-Clark, the maker of Kleenex tissues and Huggies diapers, has significant potential upside from its pending merger with Kenvue, owner of brands including Tylenol and Band-Aid. Kimberly-Clark shares gained nearly 11% in October, while the stock traded at less than 15 times earnings and had a 4.7% dividend yield. Cramer said Procter & Gamble remained an attractive defensive investment after better-than-expected quarterly results, though he preferred Kimberly-Clark’s lower valuation and higher dividend yield.
For Constellation Brands, Cramer cited market-share gains in its core beer business and 15% shipment growth in its smaller wine and spirits division last quarter. Its shares rose 20% in October, and the stock traded at roughly 11 times earnings with a yield above 3%. Cramer favored Coca-Cola among major soda makers after its strong quarterly report, which he said was driven by higher volume rather than price increases. He also pointed to the company’s zero-calorie beverage innovation and protein options through its Fairlife milk business. Coca-Cola shares gained 9% in October.
