According to BBC News,

An IT system used by schools across Northern Ireland has been targeted in a cyber attack, the Education Authority (EA) has said. The EA announced that it would implement a password reset for all users as part of efforts to manage the security issue. This incident has resulted in all pupils being logged out of their accounts, hindering their access to educational resources just weeks before important exams.

The EA spokesperson confirmed that immediate steps were taken to contain the issue and that a full investigation is underway. However, they could not yet confirm if any personal data has been affected. As a precaution, the EA has mandated a complete password reset across the school network, and access to the system remains unavailable as further security tests are conducted.

Schools are expressing concern over the timing of this disruption, especially as more than 800 pupils at Methodist College in Belfast are preparing for GCSE, AS, and A-Level exams shortly after the Easter break. Principal Jenny Lendrum highlighted that the C2K system is essential for students to access their work and other educational materials, which are crucial for their revision during this period.

Students have voiced their frustrations regarding the attack’s impact on their ability to study. Kian Hawes, a pupil and education officer for the Secondary Students Union of Northern Ireland, noted that the timing of the incident would pile pressure on students who rely heavily on online resources for revision. He emphasized the importance of resolving the issue swiftly to allow students to maximize their study time before exams begin.

The education committee chair at Stormont, Nick Mathison, stressed the need for clarity regarding potential data breaches and urged the EA to communicate quickly with those who may be affected. He called for immediate guidance on data security if necessary, underscoring the urgency of the situation as students prepare for their upcoming exams.
