Research indicates that taking a daily multivitamin for two years may slow certain markers of biological ageing, although the results are modest. According to The Guardian, the study involved 958 healthy participants with an average age of about 70 years, who were divided into four groups to receive various combinations of multivitamins and placebos.
The study analyzed blood samples to assess changes in five different measures of DNA methylation, which are used to estimate biological age. Participants taking multivitamins showed a slowdown in biological ageing for two of these measures, particularly those related to mortality risk, equating to about four months less biological ageing over the two years.
Despite these findings, researchers caution that the clinical relevance of the results remains unclear. Dr. Howard Sesso, a senior author of the study, emphasized that while there are no known risks associated with multivitamin use in their two large clinical trials, it is not yet determined who might benefit from them.
Critics of the study, including experts from Columbia University and Imperial College London, warn that the effects observed are minimal and stress the importance of a healthy diet and lifestyle over reliance on supplements. Dr. Pilar Guallar Castillón advised against taking multivitamins, recommending a varied diet rich in fruits and vegetables instead.
