Residents of Nauiyu, also known as Daly River, are in discussions with the Northern Territory government about relocating to higher ground after severe flooding has impacted the area twice this year. According to ABC News, around 350 evacuees from the community are currently sheltered in Batchelor, following the worst floods since 1998.

Local officials, including long-time resident and councillor Andy McTaggart, have proposed a potential relocation site about five kilometers away. McTaggart has been in contact with the NT government’s flood recovery unit to discuss plans for a new evacuation center and housing development. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive plan to ensure the safety of residents during future flood events.

The Catholic Church, which owns land purchased in 1955 for a mission, has expressed willingness to donate the property for the community’s relocation. Bishop of Darwin Charles Gauci stated that he would support the use of church land if the community decides to move. He acknowledged the importance of community consensus in the relocation process.

The NT government has initiated damage assessments in Nauiyu and is developing recovery plans. A spokesperson confirmed that the government recognizes the community’s desire to relocate and that stakeholder engagement will be essential in shaping the town’s future. Plans for a potential workers’ camp to assist recovery efforts are also underway.

As discussions continue, McTaggart remains hopeful that this time the community’s requests will lead to meaningful action, marking a significant step forward in the long-standing efforts to address flood risks in the area.
