Residents from Daly River, also known as Nauiyu, will return home for the first time in more than two weeks, after being evacuated from their homes due to major flooding. The Northern Territory government made an emergency declaration for Daly River earlier this month, leading to the evacuation of all but a few locals from the small Top End community.

According to ABC News, floodwaters in the area peaked at more than 14 metres, affecting local infrastructure and forcing residents to stay at the Foskey Pavilion in Darwin. Several hundred evacuees have been sleeping on temporary camping cots since February 4, relying on supplies provided by welfare groups.

As water levels have receded below the moderate flood level, repatriation efforts are expected to be completed today. Luccio Cercarelli, chief executive of the Department of Chief Minister and Cabinet, confirmed that flood clean-up teams have been hard at work to restore essential services in Daly River, including the local health clinic, school, and store.

While showers are forecast for the coming days, the Bureau of Meteorology has assured residents that no further flooding is expected. Public access to the Daly River Road remains closed, with permits required for essential workers as assessments continue. SecureNT advised any Daly River locals still in Darwin after the repatriation but needing help to go home should contact 1800 290 659 to access Larrakia Nation’s Return to Country program.
