Dan Levy, known for his success with Schitt’s Creek, returns with a new sitcom titled Big Mistakes, showcasing his comedic talents in a fresh setting. In this series, Levy stars as Nicky, a pastor who is keeping his boyfriend a secret from his family and his flock. The show, co-created with Rachel Sennott, features a strong supporting cast, including Laurie Metcalf as Nicky’s highly strung, emotionally incontinent mother and Taylor Ortega as his cool school teacher sister, Morgan.

According to The Guardian, the plot kicks off with a comedic twist when Nicky and Morgan find themselves in possession of a fake diamond necklace, leading them into the dangerous world of organized crime. However, the storyline is critiqued for its implausibility, as the motivations behind the characters’ actions often lack clarity and depth. While the premise of ordinary people getting caught up in crime is not new, Big Mistakes struggles to maintain tension and coherence in its narrative.

Despite these shortcomings, the dynamic between Nicky and Morgan shines, capturing the essence of sibling relationships filled with humor and tension. Levy’s portrayal of Nicky, combined with Ortega’s comedic timing, creates a delightful on-screen chemistry that resonates with viewers. Metcalf’s performance as the overbearing mother adds another layer of complexity, balancing authority with vulnerability.

Although Big Mistakes does not reach the heights of Levy’s previous work, it offers an engaging mix of domestic situations and cringe-worthy humor. The series provides a platform for the cast to showcase their talents, with standout performances that elevate the material. While the show may not be a groundbreaking success, it demonstrates Levy’s ability to craft entertaining family dynamics amidst chaotic circumstances. Big Mistakes is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
