England manager Thomas Tuchel has defended his choice of full-backs after confirming Reece James will miss Saturday’s World Cup match against Panama. According to BBC News, James was assessed by medical staff following Tuesday’s goalless draw against Ghana, where he reported a hamstring issue.

Tuchel confirmed that James did not travel to New Jersey from their Kansas City base for the crucial Group L game. However, he remains optimistic about James’s chances of participating in England’s potential last-32 match next week, despite the player being a significant doubt for the start of the knockout stages.

The injury of James, along with Tino Livramento’s calf issue that forced him to return home, has raised questions about Tuchel’s decision to select only three recognized full-backs for the tournament. The squad includes Djed Spence, James, and Livramento, while Nico O’Reilly, who has played left-back, is primarily a midfielder. Dan Burn, recognized as a centre-back, has also played at left-back.

Despite the injury setbacks, Tuchel expressed confidence in his available options, stating, “I selected the team, so I’m very happy with everything with the characteristic of the players and strengths that they give us.” He emphasized the need to adapt and find solutions as the tournament progresses.

In more positive news, Tuchel confirmed that Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, and Elliot Anderson would be available for the match against Panama. Both Rice and Anderson had missed training but returned, while Saka is prepared to start after recovering from a long-term Achilles tendinitis complaint.
