According to BBC News, Daniel Kinahan was brought to Dublin on an Irish government jet from the United Arab Emirates and appeared before the Special Criminal Court under heavy police security. Armed officers were positioned at the court entrances as journalists and members of the public gathered.

Kinahan was charged with one offence of directing the activities of a criminal organisation between October 2015 and April 2017. He was not required to enter a plea at this stage. The prosecution has formally commenced, and he is due to decide whether to attend the next hearing on 5 October in person or by video link from prison.

His lawyers have previously told the BBC that allegations that he is a crime boss are false and have no evidential basis. They also said he has no criminal record or convictions. Law-enforcement agencies on both sides of the Atlantic believe he is a leading figure in the Kinahan Organised Crime Group.

The Irish government negotiated an extradition treaty with the UAE, signed in 2024, which enabled the return. Kinahan is the second person brought to Ireland under its terms. The first, Sean McGovern, was sentenced to 24 years in jail in June after pleading guilty to two charges of directing a criminal organisation.

The Kinahan group began as a street drug-dealing operation in Dublin in the 1980s and later became an international organised-crime player. It has been linked to drug trafficking, money laundering and murder. In 2022, the US offered a $5m reward for information about Kinahan, his father Christopher Senior and brother Christopher Junior.
