Residents of Deir el-Balah, a city in central Gaza, participated in municipal elections on April 25, marking the first such event since 2006. Voters, including Salama Badwan and his daughter Dunia, expressed excitement about the opportunity to cast their ballots and influence change in their community. According to Al Jazeera, the elections come after a ceasefire following a devastating conflict that impacted the region.

Polling stations were set up in temporary fibreglass tents due to extensive damage from the recent war. Badwan emphasized the elections as a chance for Palestinians to achieve change through democratic means, highlighting the need for a municipal council independent of the rival factions Hamas and Fatah.

Dunia, who was voting for the first time, expressed her hope for a better future, stating that she chose candidates who are young and capable of addressing the pressing issues in Deir el-Balah. Many voters shared her sentiment, eager for improvements in local infrastructure and services that have deteriorated during the ongoing crisis.

Awda Abdel Karim Abu Baraka, a 73-year-old voter, underscored the elections’ significance as a demonstration of democratic choice and called for respect for the city’s residents who have suffered significantly. Despite the challenges posed by the recent conflict, the community’s commitment to participate in the electoral process reflects a desire for gradual change and a return to stability.
