According to BBC News, Democrats have won control of the US House of Representatives and are moving toward potentially taking the Senate in the 2026 midterm elections.

Democrats secured a surprise Senate victory in South Carolina, where Annie Andrews defeated Darline Graham, who had been appointed after the death of her brother, Senator Lindsey Graham. The party also held Jon Ossoff’s Senate seat in Georgia and captured the open Republican-held seat in North Carolina, with former Governor Roy Cooper defeating Michael Whatley.

The North Carolina result was the first of the four Senate pickups Democrats need for control. With South Carolina also won, attention has turned to Republican-held Senate seats in Texas, Kansas and Ohio. CBS News, the BBC’s US partner, rated the Texas and Kansas races as leaning Democratic.

Democrats also won a House majority for the first time since 2022. In Florida, Republicans had redrawn three Democratic-held districts to improve their prospects, but lost all three. Democrats flipped open House seats in western North Carolina and Kentucky and appeared positioned for further gains in Virginia and Indiana.

The party’s performance was driven by strong Democratic turnout, especially among black voters in the South, and by Hispanic voters in Florida returning to Democratic candidates. Republican Senator Ashley Moody narrowly won re-election in Florida, while Byron Donalds won the governor’s race. Early results elsewhere suggested Democratic gains could extend further into Republican territory.
