According to BBC News, Joseph Gibson, 35, has been sentenced to three years and two months in prison after taking almost £68,000 from four victims. Two of the victims had met Gibson on the dating app Tinder, and he convinced one that they were in a relationship.
Gibson, from Penbryn Nant in Ruthin, Denbighshire, pleaded guilty to four charges of fraud by false representation. Bristol Crown Court heard that he falsely claimed to have served in the Special Boat Service, to be a multimillionaire and to own yachts. He also told victims that he had cancer.
Recorder Jaron Crooknorth said Gibson’s offending, between July 2020 and October 2021, was “serious, sophisticated and sustained”. The judge said Gibson used false names, invented business opportunities and showed fake bank statements suggesting substantial wealth in order to persuade people to hand over money.
One victim sent money for alleged business opportunities, hospital expenses and online trading, losing more than £5,600. Another victim, known as SC, handed over more than £30,000 after claims of potential investment and trading returns, losing £21,000 after receiving about £9,700 back. JH gave Gibson £28,000 based on claims that he was a successful businessman and received £10,000 back. Retired super yacht captain PH invested £23,350.
The court heard that the victims suffered financial and emotional harm, with some left heavily in debt and with damaged relationships. A further hearing will consider how Gibson can repay them. His barrister had asked for sentencing to be deferred to allow him time to earn money, but the prosecution raised concerns about his finances and credibility, citing money spent on cars and overseas travel.
