Arabic version: اختبار الدنمارك قد يعزز آمال ويلز في يورو 2028
According to BBC News, Wales can take a significant step towards protecting their Nations League status and improving their Euro 2028 qualifying prospects when they face Denmark at Cardiff City Stadium on Sunday. The Group A4 match begins at 19:45 BST.
Craig Bellamy’s side enter the game after beating Norway 2-1 in Cardiff, ending a six-game winless run. It was Wales’ first victory of this Nations League A campaign after opening defeats in Portugal and Denmark. A win against the Danes would give Wales successive victories over higher-ranked nations for the first time in more than a decade.
Wales remain bottom of Group A4, behind Denmark and Norway on goal difference. However, victory would leave their fate in their own hands before the final fixtures: away to Norway in Oslo on 14 November and at home to Portugal three days later. Wales previously suffered immediate relegation without a win in their first League A campaign under Rob Page in 2022.
Changes to the relegation format mean finishing bottom would not automatically send Wales down in every case. Only the two worst-performing fourth-placed teams will be relegated, while the other two will enter two-legged play-offs in March 2027. The two best third-placed teams will remain in League A, with the next two entering play-offs. Wales are currently the best of the fourth-placed sides, while a win over Denmark would also keep alive the possibility of finishing second and reaching next spring’s Nations League quarter-finals.
The result also matters for Euro 2028 seeding. Wales will co-host the tournament with England, the Republic of Ireland and Scotland but must go through the standard qualifying process. The draw in Belfast takes place on 6 December, with the 12 best teams in the Nations League overall ranking after next month’s final fixtures becoming first seeds. Avoiding bottom place would make Wales a top seed and keep them apart from the leading teams in the qualifying draw.
