According to ABC News, Australian broadcaster and former senator Derryn Hinch was remembered at a state funeral service in Melbourne for a long career in journalism, an outspoken personality and a strong sense of justice. Hinch died aged 82 on July 10 after several years of declining health.

Family, friends and colleagues gathered in Port Melbourne to reflect on a life they described as rich and fully lived. A tribute from his brother, Desmond “Des” Hinch, was read by broadcaster Craig Willis. Des asked attendees to hold onto at least one special memory of his brother, comparing the collection of memories to the colourful, changing mosaic seen through a kaleidoscope.

Former wife Jacki Weaver, who could not attend in person, delivered a video eulogy. She described herself as “Derryn’s third wife and close friend for almost half a century” and thanked him for being a good stepfather to her son, Dylan Walters. Weaver said she had loved Hinch “from the very start to the very end” before wishing him “good night, sweet dreams”.

Veteran journalist Ray Martin said there was nothing subtle about Hinch or his opinions, calling him “brave and brash, with an ego that could light up a small city”. Martin also noted Hinch’s love of words and his books. Victorian MP Danny Pearson, representing the premier, said Hinch gave a voice to the voiceless and achieved “real change” for victims and survivors of abuse through his Senate advocacy.

Former 3AW newsreader Tony Tardio said there would “never be another one like” Hinch, recounting his work as a journalist, radio and television star, political party founder and senator. The service included performances by Rhonda Burchmore, Bob Valentine, Nikki Nicholls and Hinch’s goddaughter Ellie O’Connell. Professor Bob Jones said Hinch’s liver transplant gave him an extra 15 productive years.
