Northern Fangak County in Jonglei State has been devastated by severe flooding for the past four years. The persistent deluge has completely overwhelmed the county, with water levels rising despite ongoing humanitarian efforts.
Surrounded by dykes, the county has struggled to contain the rapidly increasing water levels. Sources report that recent heavy downpours have exacerbated the situation, causing water to flow uncontrollably and breach the man-made dykes. The local youth have taken significant risks to reinforce these dykes, striving to prevent further destruction.
The flooding crisis began in 2020 when the Greater Upper Nile region was heavily impacted. Jonglei State suffered the most, with floods affecting half of its counties. This led to massive displacement and significant loss of livestock.
Recently, Unity State’s Bentiu has also been at risk of flooding for the second time. Despite state government measures to protect residents, the warning remains dire, with heavy rains expected to continue through August, September, and October, placing the population at high risk.
The situation in Northern Fangak County highlights the urgent need for enhanced flood mitigation strategies and continued humanitarian support to protect vulnerable communities in South Sudan.
