Digitel has officially launched its Independence Marathon 2026, with the event announced on Monday, 22 June. The marathon is designed to promote peace, unity, healthy living and environmental awareness across South Sudan.
As preparations begin, excitement is building among communities throughout the country. Digitel believes that sport plays an important role in bringing people together, encouraging physical fitness and supporting mental wellbeing.
The Independence Marathon is held annually on 9 July as part of South Sudan’s Independence Day celebrations. This year’s event will be held under the theme “Resilience, Unity and a Green Future”, reflecting the strength of the South Sudanese people and the shared responsibility to build a united, healthy and environmentally conscious nation.
Running and other sporting activities can help reduce the risk of health conditions, improve cardiovascular fitness and encourage people to adopt healthier lifestyles. Through the marathon, Digitel hopes to inspire more South Sudanese citizens to make sport and physical activity a regular part of their lives.
The event also aims to bring together people from different communities, backgrounds and age groups in a positive national celebration centred on unity, resilience and progress.
The launch was attended by representatives from the South Sudan Athletics Federation (SSAF). The Independence Marathon will take place on Thursday, 9 July, from 6:30am to 8:30am at the National Stadium.
The event will feature a 10-kilometre race, open to participants from a wide range of backgrounds and age groups.
