Arabic version: غواص يلتقط لقطات نادرة لسمكة القرش البيضاء الكبيرة في البحر الأبيض المتوسط
A diver who filmed an incredibly rare encounter with a Great White shark in the Mediterranean Sea in May has described the moment as “pretty special.” Volunteer diver Derk Remmers shared that the shark was close enough to evoke a trembling response as he operated his camera. The sighting occurred many miles offshore between Tunisia and Sicily.
According to BBC News, scientists believe that overfishing has contributed to driving the species to near extinction in the Mediterranean. Despite this, conservationists are optimistic that the sighting may prompt governments to consider establishing marine protected areas in these waters.
The footage was captured by divers working for the NGO Healthy Seas, who were diving to highlight the problem of so-called “ghost fishing nets.” This encounter highlights the ongoing challenges faced by marine life in the region and the importance of conservation efforts.
