Are you a director, alternate director or office of either a:
- company
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporation
- corporate trustee, for example, of a self-managed super fund
- charity or not-for-profit organisation that is a company or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporation
- registered Australian body, for example, an incorporated association that is registered with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) and trades outside the state or territory in which it is incorporated
- foreign company registered with ASIC and carrying on business in Australia (regardless of where you live)?
If you answered yes to any of the above, you need to apply for your Director ID.
A director identification number (director ID) is a unique identifier you will keep forever. It will help to prevent the use of false or fraudulent director identities.
Shareholders, employees, creditors, consumers, external administrators and regulators are entitled to know the names and certain details of the directors of a company.
You must apply for your own director ID, however your Tax Practitioner can assist you with it. The fastest way to apply is online through MyGovID.
You need at least 2 of the following Australian identity documents to achieve a standard identity strength:
- passport (current or not more than 3 years expired)
- driver’s licence or learner’s permit
- birth certificate
- citizenship certificate
- Medicare card
- visa (using your foreign passport)
- ImmiCard.
If you are not fully identified with MyGovID, you may need other documents such as TFN, superannuation or ITA. If you cannot obtain a MyGovID account for any reason, you can do this by phoning the Australian Business Registry Service (ABRS) on13 62 50 for assistance or talk to your Tax Practitioner.
