According to ABC News, Dolly Parton died at 80 after a seven-decade career that made her one of the most decorated performers in music. Her family announced her death, ending a life that began in rural Tennessee and grew into a career spanning country music, pop, film and business.
Born Dolly Rebecca Parton on January 16, 1946, she was the fourth child of Avie Lee and Robert Lee Parton. She grew up with 11 siblings in a one-room shack in the Great Smoky Mountains, without electricity, heating or running water. Parton began singing before she could read or write, wrote her first song at six and later became a regular on the Cas Walker Farm and Home Hour. Her first record, Puppy Love, was released when she was 13.
After becoming the first member of her family to graduate high school in 1964, Parton moved to Nashville to pursue songwriting and recording. Monument Records signed her after Fred Foster saw her potential, and Dumb Blonde became her first major hit as a singer. The song’s lyric — “this dumb blonde ain’t nobody’s fool” — became an enduring statement of her determination and control over her career.
Parton’s partnership with Porter Wagoner brought 11 studio albums and three Grammy nominations in seven years, but she ultimately left the weekly variety show in 1974. She turned that departure into I Will Always Love You, which she described as marking the end of a major chapter. That year, her solo singles I Will Always Love You, Jolene and Love Is Like A Butterfly all reached the top of the chart.
She later broadened her audience with Here You Come Again, Baby I’m Burnin’ and a film role in the 1980 comedy 9 to 5. Outside the spotlight, Parton’s personal life was anchored by Carl Dean, whom she met at 18 on her first day in Nashville. They married within two years and remained married for 60 years; Dean died in 2025. A previously unreleased Parton song, locked away at a Pigeon Forge resort since 2015, had been intended for release on her 100th birthday.
