Downing Street has hit out at “people trying to interfere in our democracy and seeking to stir up division” following comments made by JD Vance regarding the murder of Henry Nowak. The 18-year-old British student was fatally stabbed in December by Vickrum Digwa, who was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 21 years.
According to BBC News, Vance attributed Nowak’s death to the “mass invasion of migrants” and called for a response of “righteous anger.” In response, a Downing Street spokesman emphasized that the Nowak family “have said they do not want his death to be used to create further division.”
The situation escalated when Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer accused tech billionaire Elon Musk of attempting to incite division over Nowak’s murder. Musk had posted on X, urging people to share footage showing how police handled Nowak in his final moments, which has sparked violent protests in Southampton.
During these protests, police faced aggressive behavior, resulting in injuries to eleven officers and one police dog, with two arrests made. The Conservatives and Reform UK criticized the handling of the case, arguing that it demonstrated a “two-tier policing” system in the UK. Liberal Democrats leader Ed Davey called for unity, urging resistance against politicizing Nowak’s death.
