Adriano Goldman, the cinematographer on HBO’s Harry Potter series, described the production’s shooting conditions as “brutal” because the camera crew must work around the young cast’s strict schedules. According to Variety, Goldman said the team “has to shoot really fast, and the faster you go, the more you compromise quality.” He added that the children’s limited screen time requires a very specific methodology: “You practically have to pre-shoot all the scenes while they’re in class.”
Goldman gave specifics about the practical effects of that timetable. He said Dominic McLaughlin (Harry Potter), Alastair Stout (Ron Weasley) and Arabella Stanton come to set for roughly “an hour and a half,” during which the crew aims to complete “six setups” before the young actors must leave. The cinematographer noted that shooting out of order is common under those constraints and called the process “really complicated,” adding, “I’ve done one now.”
This production setup matters because the show must combine filming with the child actors’ schooling. The BBC reported in July 2025 that Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden built a temporary school for the many young performers; the Three Rivers District Council permitted the studio to “use a series of portable buildings as a school facility for the next decade.” The proposed classrooms were designed for up to 600 pupils during peak periods but will typically serve about 150 students, and the facility will operate on weekdays between 5:30 am and 8:30 pm so actors can fit in studies around night shoots, reshoots and location filming. Those arrangements help explain why Goldman’s team must pre-shoot and rapidly cycle through setups.
The production choices Goldman described have direct implications for how scenes are filmed and the crew’s workflow: compressed actor availability leads to fast-paced shooting, out-of-order schedules and reliance on pre-shot material. That, Goldman warned, can force compromises in image quality when speed is prioritized.
