According to BBC News, former British number one Jack Draper has withdrawn from the Mubadala DC Open in Washington because of the long-term arm injury that continues to cause discomfort.

The 24-year-old left-hander was due to make his first appearance since withdrawing from Wimbledon last month. He pulled out of the ATP 500 event on Monday after experiencing increased soreness in his serving arm, despite saying at the weekend that he was feeling physically good.

Draper has dealt with bone bruising in his arm for more than a year. He had appeared strong in practice while working with new coach Andy Murray, but the Washington withdrawal repeats a pattern from Wimbledon, where he spoke positively about his fitness before pulling out 24 hours before his opening match.

“These last months have felt like nothing but adversity and setbacks,” Draper wrote on Instagram. “Most days I’ve spent in doubt, yet hopeful that I can keep taking positive steps forward and finding ways to progress.”

Draper remains hopeful of playing in Montreal and Cincinnati before the US Open begins on 30 August. The former world number four, now ranked 147th, has played only 14 matches over the past 12 months and has not competed at a major since the US Open in August. Mackenzie McDonald will replace him in the Washington draw as a lucky loser.
