The driver involved in a fatal crash at a school in Wimbledon, London, has been charged with multiple offenses. Claire Freemantle, 48, faces two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and seven counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. The incident, which occurred in July 2023, resulted in the deaths of eight-year-old girls Nuria Sajjad and Selena Lau during a school event.

According to BBC News, Freemantle’s car crashed into The Study Preparatory School’s lawn, where the end-of-term tea party was taking place. Initially, the Metropolitan Police concluded their investigation without charges against Freemantle, attributing the crash to an undiagnosed epileptic seizure. However, following public outcry and a review, the case has been reopened, leading to the current charges.

The parents of the two girls expressed relief that the case is moving forward, describing their loss as an “unthinkable tragedy.” They have long sought answers regarding the circumstances of the crash, stating that they felt compelled to challenge the Crown Prosecution Service’s earlier decision not to pursue charges.

Commander Charmaine Brenyah of the Metropolitan Police acknowledged shortcomings in the initial investigation and stated that the police would fundamentally reset their approach to investigating serious collisions. The police watchdog, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, is also reviewing the actions of 11 officers involved in the initial inquiry.

Freemantle is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 16 June 2025. Her legal team has expressed that she is devastated by the incident and has no memory of the crash. As the case progresses, the families of the victims continue to seek clarity and accountability for the tragic event that took their daughters’ lives.
