According to ABC News, four teenagers have been arrested after an assault at a shop in Sunshine, in Melbourne’s west, left a retail worker in a critical condition.

Investigators said two boys aged 13 and 15, and two girls aged 14 and 15, entered a shop on Hampshire Road shortly after 2pm on Saturday and stole items.

A physical altercation broke out when two staff members attempted to confront the teenagers. A 60-year-old male staff member sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

Police have arrested all four teenagers, who are expected to be interviewed by detectives. The incident follows Victorian Premier Ben Carroll’s pledge this week to increase safeguards for retail workers.

The Victorian government introduced laws last year raising the maximum penalty for assaulting or threatening hospitality and retail workers to five years. Mr Carroll also announced workplace protection orders that would allow businesses to ban aggressive customers from their premises.
