Elena Anita Begovic, the woman who fatally struck 12-year-old Marshall Oakley-Stagg, has been granted a restricted driver’s licence by the Hobart Magistrates Court. This decision comes after she was sentenced in December 2024 for negligent driving resulting in the boy’s death in April 2024.

According to ABC News, Begovic, 53, received a two-year wholly suspended prison sentence and a 12-month disqualification from driving. The court approved her application for a restricted licence, allowing her to drive under specific conditions.

Magistrate Robert Webster outlined the terms of the licence, permitting Begovic to drive to and from work, transport her children to and from the bus stop, and collect them from school in emergencies. He emphasized that without the licence, she would face significant hardship, impacting her ability to provide for her family.

The prosecution did not oppose the application, and Magistrate Webster noted that Begovic’s prior traffic violations were minimal, consisting of only two infringement notices. He expressed confidence that she would not pose a danger to other road users, adding that her driving would be limited to approximately 11 hours a week and must follow the shortest route available.

Despite the granting of the restricted licence, Begovic’s suspended sentence remains in effect, ensuring that she will continue to face consequences for her actions.
