According to Allafrica, drone strikes on two warehouses in Shikan locality in Sudan’s North Kordofan state on 20 September destroyed learning supplies intended for children. The losses included more than 292,000 school textbooks and 40,000 Arabic Language and Mathematics Review Books, as well as other learning materials.

The supplies had been intended for distribution beginning in October 2026, at the start of the new school year. They were due to reach schools in West Bara, Bara and Um Dam. UNICEF said the destruction is expected to affect the learning of thousands of children.

“The destruction of these learning materials is a setback for children at a time when every effort is being made to get them back into the classroom,” said Angela Kearney, UNICEF Representative in Sudan. She said many children had missed years of schooling because of the conflict, while schools already faced shortages of teachers, desks and learning materials.

UNICEF said delivering education supplies to conflict-affected areas of Sudan is often challenging, making the loss particularly significant. The agency called on all parties to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure and to uphold obligations under international humanitarian law. It said education supplies and facilities must be safeguarded so children can fulfill their right to education.
