According to BBC News, Sudan’s army has been accused of carrying out drone strikes that reportedly killed more than 200 people in West Kordofan state and the disputed Abyei border area. The reported victims included dozens travelling to a funeral, while a market in Abyei was also struck.

The Sudan War Observatory said strikes in two parts of West Kordofan on Sunday evening killed 150 people. It said a truck carrying about 200 mourners was hit on arrival in Al-Dabab, killing 145 people, while a strike on a tent where mourners had gathered killed five more. The group reported 150 injuries and said a market in Al-Mujlad was also bombed, though the toll there was unclear.

In Abyei, Information Minister Yohana Akol Ngor said 73 people were killed when drones hit Amiet Common Market on Monday. A military source told the BBC the army carried out the attack and described the market as a fuel supply site for the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. Sudan’s army has not responded to the allegations over the West Kordofan strikes, but said it did not attack civilians even if it believed RSF fighters were among them.

BBC Verify said satellite images showed extensive burned buildings in the north-east corner of the market and verified footage showing smoke, a petrol tanker and large fires. Médecins Sans Frontières said Ameth Bek Hospital in Abyei had received more than 20 patients, including critical cases and people with burns.

South Sudan has summoned Sudan’s ambassador to protest the Abyei attack, raising fears that the conflict could cross the border. The UN said continued deadly drone strikes were killing civilians and disrupting essential services, as 20 million people faced acute hunger and famine risks increased in parts of Darfur and Greater Kordofan.
